A BRIEF HISTORY OF KIA

Kia actually rose to prominence by selling South Korea’s first mass-produced bicycles, in 1951, then tried its hand at motorcycles, and finally decided to extend its operations to automaking in the early 1960s. But those early cars were built under a license from Mazda. It would be some three decades before the first Kia-designed car — the Sephia — was introduced.
Kia, however, had chosen a bad time to go into the auto business. The global financial crisis of the early 1990s came along, forcing the company into bankruptcy. The good news? Kia was then rescued (and purchased) by the Hyundai Motor Company — which had the resources to help revive the Kia brand and position it for success with U.S. buyers. Today, with a significant U.S. manufacturing presence, Kia continues to win over new customers!
