The first Mazda passenger cars didn’t debut until 1960, and the brand took a multi-year detour soon after as it invested in rotary engines as a way of standing out from the crowd.
Rotary-powered Mazdas hit their peak with the 1978 RX-7 sports car and lasted through 2012, when the RX-8 version was retired. Yet it was actually joining the crowd that helped Mazda make the jump to the big leagues. The company partnered with Ford from 1974 through 2015, even supplying the platforms for Blue Oval small cars like the Ford Escort and Fiesta.
